Verily Life Sciences
I decided to join Verily at the beginning of 2020 because I believed that healthcare presented some of the most meaningful and impactful design challenges available.
One global pandemic, multiple design teams, and 12+ product launches later, I’ve learned an enormous amount – both about the unique complexity of our health ecosystem and the role that great design can play in helping it run just a little bit more smoothly.
During my time at Verily, I’ve been both individual contributor and a manager. I’ve worked on apps for individuals managing their health as well as data platforms for researchers and professionals. I’ve had the opportunity to grow and develop two incredible teams from the ground up, while also contributing my own design work.
Emerging Projects (2020-2023)
Our Emerging Projects UX team, named for the breadth of “zero to one” projects we supported, was a group of 8 designers working across:
Healthy at Work, a COVID-19 screening solution aimed at keeping students and employees safe as they returned to shared spaces
Verily Retinal Service, an award-winning screening service (and homegrown hardware) for early detection of diabetes retinopathy
Granular, a stop-loss insurance program powered by novel analytics and risk modeling
Value Suite, a data and engagement platform for health systems aiming to streamline their performance under value-based care reimbursement models
Initially, designing for such a wide range of solutions felt like supporting a portfolio of independent startups. There was a lot of “reinventing the wheel” for each solution, resulting in thoughtfully crafted but disjointed experiences across the suite.
To address this, I led the charge to create a company-wide design system and built support for migrating all of our teams and products onto it. I also partnered with engineering and product leaders to establish a single “Precision Health Platform” (later to become Verily Pre), unifying everything from our data model to application framework and SaaS foundations.
While many of these projects were ultimately wound down as part of a company-wide refocusing, our work to unify infrastructure and design patterns proved to be the essential foundation for Verily’s next era.
Platform UX (2023-2026)
As a Staff UX Designer, and later Director of Platform UX, I currently oversee a team of about a dozen designers, illustrators, content strategists, and accessibility specialists working in three main areas:
Design foundations. Expanding on the success of our design system, we partner with our marketing team on brand and visual design, along with an overhauled illustration system, design tokens, React component library, Figma infrastructure, and content/accessibility guidelines.
Programs & Pathways. This team’s work includes supporting our Viewpoint Site CTMS solution for clinical research, as well as tools for configuring and operating consumer health programs like Verily Me and Lightpath.
Data Solutions. With advances in AI-powered drug development and care delivery, high-quality data is becoming increasingly critical to improving health. This team has launched solutions for transforming (Refinery), sharing (Exchange), and analyzing (Workbench) large health data sets.
While some of this work (notably Workbench) is publicly available to demo, much of the rest is still under NDA. Please reach out if you’re interested in learning more.
